Playing with watercolors in a new sketchbook (Stillman & Birn Zeta series), working through ideas for a new painting…and, well… one thing led to another.
In a world of gray
Thoughts of love grow like ‘ōhi’a
‘I’iwi sing in lehua rain
A native tree in the Hawaiian islands, the ʻōhiʻa lehua is the first plant to grow on new areas of lava flow. The ‘I’iwi is a scarlet Hawaiian honeycreeper, a native bird with a unique bill shaped for drinking nectar. The term “lehua rain” refers to the legend of the ‘ōhi’a tree where plucking a flower causes the heavens to weep at the separation of two lovers, ‘Ōhi’a and Lehua.
Princess Lehua is beautiful. New sketchbooks are exciting, which is why I have so many of them, still “new”. Thank you for sharing your lovely work, my friend. x

There is something about a book with blank pages, whether a sketchbook or journal, the promise of dreams to come…it makes me laugh and my heart glad to hear I am not the only one who likes to keep a few new books on hand. Thank you for your thoughtful words and for visiting. /hug.

Such a beautiful painting Haunani! I love your paintings and back stories, they always take me to Hawaii which is so lovely. I’m a big fan of Stillman and Birn too. I just received 4 sketchbooks as a gift from my husband, to say the least, I am thrilled!

Thank you for your kind words and taking the time to visit. What a wonderful gift from your husband! I hope you continue to share your gorgeous art with the rest of us…I can understand why you could use 4 new books and it is exciting, am looking forward to seeing more artful gems. Do you have a preference on what series you use? This is my first time using the Zeta, I like the smoothness of it and it handled sketching and the amounts of water very nicely, but am curious now about the Beta series…any thoughts on Beta or even Delta? Thank you again.

This painting sketch…..lovely with much promise for progression. The legend is beautiful…..I love other cultures and spiritual lore connected. As for notebooks….my sacred books. I keep them in different places and write my thoughts….words and images as they come up. My life escapes into these little blank books.

Wow… this is just gorgeous Haunani!! Love hearing the story and the pop of red from the honeycreeper is wonderful. But her hair really caught my eye… I can almost feel the wind and the composition is just lovely! 🙂

Beautiful painting and words :-). Rain kisses the earth and brilliantly colored flowers bloom. Colorful birds sing in the colorful trees. And some humans notice. Because the Hawaiian words you use have beautiful, “natural” sounds, and you talk about rain a lot, I was starting to think that Hawaiians have many words for rain. So lovely that they do!

Thank you for visiting and your kind words. Am not surprised you noticed, about the ‘rain talk’ being an outdoors person yourself, but yes…Hawaiians have many words for rain because there are so many ‘types’ of rain, temperature, weight, season, and sound to name a few…then of course there are the hidden meanings…it may sound like we are talking about the rain…but actually it might be about something else…;D Peace.
